Chapter 23

THAT MAGIC MOMENT

Across the restaurant, Devon and Daisy danced in silent harmony, immediately falling into a rhythm long forgotten, but quickly remembered as though no time had passed.

The pianist’s fingers danced across the ivory keys, releasing the twinkling sounds of memories gone by.

They twirled, they dipped, they danced.

Perhaps they even danced the night away. Time, after all, had no meaning for lovers. Time was simply a thing to overcome for them. But together, they overcame it.

Or perhaps they only danced for a few minutes.

Who could tell?

Certainly not them.

The ficus lurking suspiciously in the corner of the stage perhaps could have lent them some insight on the question of passing time, but neither of them dared break the moment to ask such a pointless question. Because what was time anyway? What was time compared to the rest of the universe? Compared to this moment of them just dancing? The answer, of course, was simply nothing.

So they just danced and maybe, just maybe, they danced the night away.

Daisy rested her head against Devon’s chest, breathing in his scent deeply.

Devon’s hand cupped her at the back of her neck.

She looked up at him, not speaking. What could there be to say that hadn’t already been said? That couldn’t be said with simply a look?

So they looked at each other and didn’t speak, lest they break the magic moment they suddenly found themselves in.

Things stirred within Devon. Feelings. Secret feelings, as it were. Feelings that he hadn’t allowed himself to feel for what felt like an eternity. And now, here in this magic moment, against the backdrop of a song he thought he’d never hear again, those secret feelings resurfaced.

Devon could sense the ficus mocking him and it took every ounce of his willpower to ignore it completely.

Without even realizing it, Devon had forgotten what she had even smelled like and upon this new revelation, there was another surge of feelings and emotions churning in his chest.

What a tangled web indeed…

Eventually, at a point just past eternity, the song began to wind down. The pianist reached the final notes, drawing each one out like he was stretching for time during an ill-advised telethon for teen acne, hoping to get that one last caller that was going to pledge enough to make the entire endeavor worthwhile.

But, alas, no call came and eventually, their song came to an end.

They stood there on the dance floor for another moment, gazing into each other’s eyes as they slowly returned from eternity.

Daisy reached up and caressed her fingers through Devon’s hair. “I’ve missed you,” she whispered.

And for the first time in a while, the voices in Devon’s head said nothing.
